Years 1-7: Harvest Hay Years 7-30: Harvest Chestnuts Chestnuts are a re-emerging tree crop in the United States. Productive blight-resistant orchard genetics are readily available. We’ve planted over 2,000 acres across 5 states, and we have trees that are ready to plant on farmland as a profitable investment. Top line revenue at maturity can exceed $10,000/acre every year, with returns in the mid teens. Chestnuts do best east of Omaha, south of Buffalo, and North of Florida. More info in comment

We worked with this landowner in 2021 to plant trees for conservation *and* profit. The whole property is 307 acres, with gorgeous forest, streams, fields, and beaver dams. Black locust was a great fit for both the soil and the landowner’s goals. If you’d like to learn more about black locust and how we work at Propagate, comment “Timber” below and I’ll send you the info. | Harry Greene

What if our woods produced food and farm income? What if we could live off the forest? What if it fed us? Chestnuts are a huge part of the equation in temperate climates. Let’s make trees on farms happen. | Harry Greene

We’ve gotten a ton of interest in trees like black locust and chestnuts, and fruiting shrubs as well. In addition to all of our free content, we’re offering an Agroforestry Fast Track course that’ll get you an actionable land plan for your farm. It’s all of the stuff I wish I had known 15 years ago. Take a gander, and drop us a line with questions. | Harry Greene

We plant trees and harvest their fruits — to feed ourselves and propagate emergent experiences. These chestnuts and persimmons have yielded not just food, but chlorophyll and euphoria for 50 years. | Harry Greene

I often get questions from young or new agroforesters, trying to figure out how they can create value for nature, society, and themselves. You don’t have to own land to make something happen. Rent or lease land, and don’t be afraid to plant trees on public lands. I recommend planting a mix of plant stock that you can take with you (cuttings, roots, etc.), and permanent trees that you can observe and interact with over the years. Plant the fast-growing stuff, and some long-term trees that don’t n

The Roman Empire significantly expanded chestnut cultivation, notably into what is now France, Northern Spain, north to East Anglia and as far south as Malta. At the same time, humans and animals spread American chestnuts from Mississippi to Maine. We’ve planted 200,000 chestnuts in agroforestry systems in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and New York. May chestnut history repeat itself, as best it can. Come along for the ride. | Harry Greene

We’ve imported and licensed Hungarian shipmast locust known as the Turbo Obelisk (patent pending). We are the only place you can get it in the United States. If you would like to plant Turbo Obelisk on your land, please visit our website: https://www.propagateag.com/trees-and-inputs | Harry Greene

Tractor tires are expensive. I empathize with farmers that have had tires punctured by honey locust thorns. And: I would like to emphasize that it is highly unlikely that black locust is responsible for flat tires. Happy to address any outstanding questions. | Harry Greene

Folding firewood jig black locust. I’ve been thinning my black locust. Cutting the small-diameter and crooked shaded trees, so the stand allocates more growth to the larger, straighter trees that I can harvest for fence posts. I’ve been meaning to make a firewood jig for a while. It folds, such that it doesn’t take up too much space under an eve. Increased efficiency and safety. I have a few giant piles of slabs/offcuts that I’m hoping to make some time to process into firewood as well. | Harry

Pine and other softwoods are great. They’re stable, easy to work with, grow straight up, and don’t require much maintenance. But the market for pine is totally saturated. Unless you own the whole supply chain, from planting to consumer, there isn’t a lot of margin to be made. Black locust and black walnuts are a different story. They’re deciduous hardwoods and therefore need pruning for straight sawlogs and fenceposts, but the value per board foot is 4-10x that of pine. If you’re keen on native
